Abstract

The aim of the research was to evaluate the air quality in the native community of Atahualpa by using lichens (Parmeliopsis) as bioindicators. A methodology based on the calculation of the Atmospheric Purity Index (IPA) was implemented using lichen species present in the area. The results showed IPA values that reflect good air quality, with abundant presence of lichens in various study areas. This is related to the low industrial activity and the conservation of the natural environment in the community, where traditional practices predominate. The findings underline the importance of lichens as efficient tools for environmental monitoring and suggest that the community of Atahualpa maintains a sustainable balance with its environment. It is concluded that preserving this condition is essential in the face of possible future pressures derived from anthropogenic activities.
